P-31 and Si-29 magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NM
R) spectroscopy has been used to study, for the first time, a new fami
ly of NASICON-type fast ionic conductors, i.e., the Na3Zr2-xYxSi2-xP1xO12 solid solution systems. The local environments surrounding phosph
orus and silicon atoms in the compounds were deduced from the P-31 and
Si-29 NMR spectra. It has been shown that Zr4+ ions can be substitute
d for Y3+ ions in the lattice of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 and the latter were fou
nd to distribute randomly in the crystalline framework.
