Leading management scholars have called for the use of nonstandard res
earch to help solve complex problems that are not tractable with stand
ard approaches. This article demonstrates the use of multivariate cata
strophe model estimation as a partial answer to that call. The approac
h makes catastrophe theory more useful for researching certain problem
atic phenomena. Furthermore, it prevents problems with the difference
regression technique used in the past. We use a small application take
n from the organization theory literature to demonstrate how the metho
d works and compare the results from this analysis to those from a LIS
REL analysis of the same data.
