Dr. Hart et Dj. Willower, PRINCIPALS ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT AND SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTAL ROBUSTNESS, The Journal of educational research, 87(3), 1994, pp. 174-179
Four hypotheses on principals' organizational commitment and school en
vironmental robustness were tested. Teachers and principals in 51 high
schools supplied data using two standard measures. To avoid same resp
ondent bias, about half of the teacher respondents completed one instr
ument, half the other. The unit of analysis was the school. Teacher pe
rceptions of their principals' commitment were positively related to s
chool robustness, but principals' self-reported commitment was not. Th
e congruence of teacher perceptions of commitment and principals' comm
itment was associated with school robustness. Principals' commitment a
nd their ratings of robustness were correlated. Teachers were lower th
an principals in their estimates of both commitment and robustness. Ho
wever, teachers' perceptions of their principal's commitment and the p
rincipals' self-reported commitment were significantly related. Explan
ations for these and other results were suggested.
