Abstract
The basic and experimental problems related to the recording and proce ssing of electron holograms of long-range electric and magnetic fields are critically examined. Emphasis is given to experimental procedures for the extraction of reliable information from holograms. A practica l example concerning the study of the field leaking from a thin magnet ic tip used in magnetic force microscopy is reported together with com puter simulations in order to underline the advantages offered by the double exposure processing technique.
