This study analyzes the goal configuration of 126 firms, based in Japa
n, U. K. and U.S., competing in global industries. The results indicat
e that firm nationality and internationalization do not affect the fir
m's goal configuration. The breadth of the firm's reward system was fo
und to be related positively to a dispersed goat configuration and, wi
thin global and multifocal industry segments, a congruence between goa
l configuration and industry position was found to be associated posit
ively with performance.
