Applications of hypermedia in alternative performance assessment in sc
ience education are explored in this paper. The ways in which modern c
ognitive theories of learning rationalize the use of hypermedia system
s in performance assessment are addressed; selected prototype applicat
ions of hypermedia in performance assessment are surveyed; and advanta
ges and disadvantages are discussed. Hypermedia appears to be a promis
ing technology for developing alternative process-oriented assessment
systems in science education.
