Using the submerged heater method, steady-state axial segregation may
be reached by normal freezing and zone solidification. With solvent-so
lute systems having equilibrium segregation coefficient k = 0.35 to 0.
5, diffusion-controlled steady-state was achieved by normal freezing.
Steady-state segregation of dopants with k much less than 0.1 was reac
hed by doping the shallow melt zone below the submerged heater (zone l
eveling). These experimental findings are explained using a recently d
eveloped analytical model of axial segregation.
