The application of geometrical diffraction theories to dielectric obje
cts requires usually an extensive mathematical formalism. In this pape
r, a simple adaptation of the Uniform Asymptotic Theory to thick arbit
rary shaped dielectric slabs with small refractive index and negligibl
e attenuation is presented. Calculated nearfields are compared with me
asurements by means of 3 cm microwaves. The polarization dependence of
the given adaptation is discussed.
