E. Geva et S. Clifton, THE DEVELOPMENT OF 1ST AND 2ND-LANGUAGE READING-SKILLS IN EARLY FRENCH IMMERSION, Canadian modern language review, 50(4), 1994, pp. 646-667
The purpose of this study was to compare good and poor readers in the
early French immersion program to good and poor readers in the regular
English stream on various indices of accuracy and speed, and to exami
ne the emergence of accuracy and fluency in reading of good and poor r
eaders in the French immersion program in English, their first languag
e, and in French, their second language. Results are discussed in term
s of developmental transitions in second language reading and implicat
ions for setting realistic program goals and adapting reading instruct
ion to student needs.
