This research describes the development of measures of student motivat
ion. Using the expectancy-value model of motivation as a theoretical r
ationale, instruments were developed to measure self-efficacy and atti
tudes toward the importance of learning in general, science, mathemati
cs, and reading/English of elementary, middle, and secondary students.
The instruments were validated with existing measures and teacher rat
ings of students. Results of die multitrait-multimethod analyses indic
ated acceptable construct-related evidence for validity. Stability est
imates of reliability fanged from .56 to .88 for the elementary school
form, .67 to .89 for the middle school form, and .69 to .88 for the h
igh school form. Conclusions and recommendations for further developme
nt are indicated.
