Existing data of nutrition surveys made in individual households of th
e former GDR were processed and interpreted in order to characterize n
utrition of individual population groups. The results revealed some re
markable differences in food consumption as well as energy and nutrien
t intake: in households of members of agricultural production cooperat
ives (especially on account of feeding this products to animals) as we
ll as higher consumption of foodstuffs from their own production (in p
articular eggs, fruit and vegetables); higher food consumption in smal
l households (predominantly in pensioner households); more frequent pa
rticipation of employed persons (persons from households of workers/cl
erks [office workers], and members of agricultural production cooperat
ives) in communal feeding; excessive intake of energy and fat, in part
icular in pensioners.
