Abstract
The chemical composition and crystalline structure of silicate particl es engulfed in human alveolar macrophages were investigated by transmi ssion analytical electron microscopy. A crystalline ZrSiO4 and an amor phous Si2AlO4 particle were identified. Small crystalline Fe micropart icles (2-4 nm), which are likely ferritin molecules, were found concen trated mainly at the amorphous particle-tissue interface.
