Abstract
The usual configurations of the illumination system of optical microsc opes, i.e. critical and Kohler illumination respectively, exhibit spat ial partial coherence. With basis on this property, we describe the be haviour of the illumination system in terms of an equivalent Schell il lumination source located at its exit pupil.
