The paper presents a number of approaches to the development of databa
se interfaces, with a particular emphasis upon the development of such
interfaces within the confines of the database system itself. Convent
ional approaches to interface development are reviewed, and weaknesses
identified which stem from the decoupling of regularly interacting co
mponents. It is shown how a more integrated approach, in which databas
es are used to implement their own interfaces, provides significant di
rect benefits without precluding subsequent support for mainstream int
erfactive development architectures.
