This paper reports on findings related to the perceptions held by memb
ers of school communities with respect to the tasks and role of effect
ive schools. The data are from a study conducted in Melbourne, Austral
ia in 1990-91. Findings from this research indicate that members of sc
hool communities: principals, teachers, school council members, parent
s and students believe that the tasks of an effective school are more
than those related to the academic program and include the development
of citizenship and self concept, personal development and employment
skills and a concern for the educational development of all members of
the school community.
