Oriented single crystals of the laser host material LiYF4, doped with
either Er3+ or Nd3+, have been grown by seeded vertical gradient freez
ing (VGF). Successful seeding, requiring a rather high amount of exces
s LiF in the melt, allowed or the production of crystals of high optic
al quality. In the case of neodymium doping, the dopant distribution c
ould be related to different convective flow patterns present at diffe
rent stages of growth.
