Abstract
Two studies investigate the latent structure of items taken from the M ultifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). In the first study, item-le vel confirmatory factor analyses establish the superiority of models i n which transformational and transactional leadership items load on se parate factors. However, the results do not provide unequivocal suppor t for the operational distinctiveness of items measuring charismatic l eadership and inspirational leadership. In the second study, scale-lev el analyses confirm speculation that the Charismatic and Inspirational Leadership scales converge to capture a global conceptualization of c harismatic leadership. Directions for future research are discussed.
