In infrared transmission experiments through a two-dimensional electro
n system with substantial lateral density modulation in an InAs quantu
m well, we directly observe plasmon absorption without the mediating h
elp of a surface metallic grating. The plasmon frequency is determined
by the average density, and its strength by the amplitude of the dens
ity modulation. It disperses in a magnetic field in predicted fashion.
