Abstract
This article outlines a theory of developmental spelling that has evol ved from qualitative research on children's invented spelling. We show how an analysis of students' invented spellings can inform teachers w hen to teach what. Examples of 3 students' (ages 6, 8, and 14) invente d spellings are provided, and an alternative approach to spelling inst ruction, called word study (word sorting, picture sorting, word huntin g), is discussed within the context of several minilessons about exami ning words by sound, within-word patterns, and meaning.
