1600 imported frozen meat and 400 fat samples from various European an
d American countries and 200 chicken samples from Beni-Suef modern aba
ttoir were examined between 1987 and May 1990. Oestrogen residues were
determined qualitatively and quantitatively using two methods (thin-l
ayer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography). In th
e present investigations oestrogen residues were found in samples of i
mported frozen meat and fat from Germany, the USA and Ireland during 1
987 but in 1988 the only positive result was from Ireland. Otherwise t
he imported samples (meat and fat) had oestrogen levels that did not e
xceed 0.05 ng/g tissue, but the chicken samples examined had levels hi
gher than this throughout the whole experimental period.
