The interaction of molecular beams of KBr with (100) surfaces of KCl i
s studied for crystal temperatures T = 595-690 K and for impinging KBr
fluxes from 1.3 x 10(11) to 1.3 x 10(14) cm-2 s-1. The results for un
dersaturation can be interpreted by incorporation of Br- ions in the o
utermost surface layer of the KCl crystal. For supersaturation the lay
er-on-layer growth mode is observed. From SIMS measurements, the forma
tion of KBr-KCl solid-solution layers at the surface can be inferred.
