M. Hemmasi et La. Graf, DETERMINANTS OF FACULTY VOTING-BEHAVIOR IN UNION REPRESENTATION ELECTIONS - A MULTIVARIATE MODEL, Journal of management, 19(1), 1993, pp. 13-32
A model of faculty unionism that integrates a diverse set of factors r
epresenting various perspectives on voting behavior in unionization dr
ives was developed. This model was then tested using data obtained fro
m faculty in three institutions of higher education simultaneously und
ergoing collective bargaining elections. The study results suggest tha
t work context, socio-political beliefs, general attitudes toward unio
ns, perceptions of union instrumentality at one's own workplace, and p
ay are strong determinants of faculty voting behavior. Union instrumen
tality perception was the single largest determinant of the vote. The
model had strong predictive power.
