Mw. Johnston et al., AN EXPLORATORY INVESTIGATION INTO THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PROMOTIONAND TURNOVER - A QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL LONGITUDINAL-STUDY, Journal of management, 19(1), 1993, pp. 33-49
Employee movement out of the organization has been examined extensivel
y, but unfortunately, research on employee movement inside the organiz
ation is less pervasive. The study reported here uses a longitudinal q
uasi-experimental design to investigate the relationships of a selecte
d set of work-related attitudes to promotion and turnover in a sample
of 157 salespeople. Results indicate that the relationships between th
e internal/external movement of the employee and several key job relat
ed attitudes (organizational commitment, propensity to leave, promotio
n satisfaction) as well as salary vary over time. In addition, there w
ere significant differences between groups (promoted stayers and non-p
romoted leavers) for satisfaction with supervisor, and time had a sign
ificant effect on all dependent variables (except job anxiety).
