A path-analytic model was employed to examine the predicted relationsh
ips among self-esteem, locus of control, self-appraisal, and attributi
ons. Participants completed two individual difference measures (self-e
steem and locus of control) and then worked on a test that they believ
ed was a managerial selection instrument. They then rated their own pe
rformance on the instrument and made attributions for their performanc
e. The model received strong support and each hypothesized path was st
atistically significant. The results are discussed with respect to rec
ent work by Levy and Foti (1989,1990) and Farh and Dobbins (1989b) and
a general framework is suggested for future research.
