Abstract
This paper draws together contributions relating to pretesting of ques tionnaires. The aim is twofold: first to consolidate recommendations m ade in the normative literature with empirical evidence on key aspects of pretesting and secondly, to identify promising areas for future re search in the area. The review points to an abundance of normative con tributions contrasted by a lack of empirical evidence. Consequently, t here are numerous issues that require empirical investigation, includi ng such fundamental questions as the most effective method of pretesti ng.
