Abstract
This article examines the differences in strategic planning system cha racteristics such as planning implementation, market research competen ce, key personnel involvement, degree of assistance provided by the pl anning staff and innovativeness of strategies between the Prospector a nd Defender strategic archetypes. The study also tests whether deviati ons from a defined ideal profile of strategic planning system characte ristics has implications for performance within each strategic archety pe. The findings reveal significant differences in strategic planning system characteristics between Prospectors and Defenders, as well as s uggest negative performance implications for deviating from a defined ideal profile of strategic planning system characteristics among Prosp ector organizations.
