Ja. Stein et al., CONSEQUENCES OF ADOLESCENT DRUG-USE ON YOUNG-ADULT JOB BEHAVIOR AND JOB-SATISFACTION, Journal of applied psychology, 78(3), 1993, pp. 463-474
Longitudinal data (N=785) collected during Ss high school years(1971-1
973) and in 1981 were used to assess the influence of adolescent drug
use on adult job behaviors, job satisfaction, and adverse terminations
while accounting for concurrent adult drug use, years of drug use, an
d adolescent achievement motivation. Relationships were minimal betwee
n adolescent drug use and adult work-related indicators in confirmator
y factor analyses (CFAs) and predictive path models. Although signific
antly related in the CFAs, higher adolescent achievement motivation di
d not predict less adult drug use when adolescent drug use was include
d as a control. Less achievement motivation in adolescence significant
ly predicted more negative job behaviors and less job satisfaction, bu
t not terminations. Correlations were significant between more adolesc
ent drug use and less adolescent achievement motivation and between ad
ult job problems and adult drug use.
