The relationship among norm-referenced measures of language, nonverbal
intelligence, and adaptive behavior was examined in a sample of 53 sc
hool-aged children (aged 8 to 12 years) with previously diagnosed comm
unication disorders. On average, these children earned scores that wer
e in the ''below average'' to ''well below average'' range on all test
s. Composite scores within test batteries designed to assess language
and adaptive behavior were intercorrelated moderately to highly. Corre
lations among these batteries, and with a measure of nonverbal intelli
gence, were in the moderate range. Substantial individual variability
was apparent as assessed using profile analysis procedures.
