RECORDING OF PATHOLOGICAL-ANATOMICAL LESI ONS AT SLAUGHTER .1. NEW PARADIGM FOR OBSERVING THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR PUBLIC-HEALTH, CONSUMER-PROTECTION, ANIMAL HEALTH AND WELFARE

The need to improve the animal health in a rather high number of Germa n pig herds is emphazised and justified. The most important goal of th is is the stepwise decrease of the amount of antibiotics used in pig f attening, however, the improvement of the quality of pigs for slaughte r is aimed at as well. The paper describes a proposal how to increase the value of the meat inspection statistics as information on the anim al health of fattening pig herds. The impact of the proposed measures on public health, consumer protection and animal welfare is explained.
