This study reflects a historical investigation of faculty salary deter
mination in the California Community Colleges before and after collect
ive bargaining enabling legislation was enacted in 1975. It attempts t
o discover whether measurable differences in unionization lead to meas
urable differences in faculty remuneration over five- and seven-year p
eriods. In addition, the effects that the local marketplace, faculty a
nd institutional characteristics, demand, and ability to pay may have
on district-level faculty salaries were considered.
