In accordance with predictions made in previous studies of conglomerat
e crystallization of coordination compounds, racemic solutions of [cis
-Co(en)2(NO2)2]Br crystallize as a conglomerate (homochiral crystals,
space group P2(1)), whereas racemic solutions of [cis-a-Co(triethylene
tetramine)(NO2)2](NO3). 1/3 H2O crystallize as a racemate (heterochira
l crystals, space group P2(1)/c). Intra- and intermolecular hydrogen-b
onded interactions are shown to control the crystallization pathway th
ese substances select, and the counter anion used is shown to play a r
ole in such selection.
