This article presents the results of an experimental investigation of
the performance of an integrated microchannel combustor/evaporator. Se
parate experimental investigations were conducted on combustion in sma
ll channels and evaporation in microchannels. These results, along wit
h the results of a simulation of heat transfer from the flue gas in mi
crochannels, were used to design, and subsequently fabricate and test,
microchannel combustor/evaporators. Performance results showed that t
he combustor/evaporator was capable of achieving high heat flares (up
to 30 W/cm(2)) while maintaining a high combustor efficiency.
