Abstract
Silicon device technology is only one source of performance improvemen ts for microprocessors and DSPs. Integration allows to put more transi stors on a die. This paper describes how additional transistors are pu t to good use in programmable processors, based on the salient charact eristics of their applications. Implications on power consumption and software tools are also noted.
