Abstract
Communication and Information are key words in todays society. Increas ing amounts of data to transfer and process and consumer's mobility ar e other characteristics of the current evolution. To answer this deman d, more efficient technologies are required, allowing higher bit rates and flexible access. Si and III-V microelectronic technologies are de veloping together in a complementary way to face this evolution. In th is article, various application areas developing in Europe and requiri ng high-speed (Chit s(-1)) or microwave transmission and/or processing are reviewed.
