Abstract
This article discusses the use of heterostructure bipolar transistor ( HBT) TCs in telecommunication system products. Of particular interest is the fit between HBT ICs and telecommunication system needs, in term s of commercial criteria as well as performance. Two areas are selecte d as examples of the telecommunications equipment marketplace: fiber-o ptic transmission and wireless access. The fit between fiber and HBT I Cs is plainly apparent, and while it is less obvious, HBT ICs are comp etitive for some applications in the case of wireless. (C) 1997 Elsevi er Science Ltd.
