Abstract
This paper discusses the methodological requirements for valid inferen ces from school effectiveness research studies. The requirements inclu de long term longitudinal data and proper statistical modelling of hie rarchical data structures. The paper outlines the appropriate multilev el statistical models and shows how these can model the complexities o f school, class and student level data.
