Abstract
In two studies, the control-beliefs of lower level compared to higher level students were examined. In both studies, the lower level student s showed higher control-beliefs than higher level students, indicating that, beyond social reference norms. students also use individual ref erence norms. The effects of grades (studies 1 and 2) and of cognitive development (study 1) were controlled.
