Abstract
Matrix algebra is ideally suited to handle problems of transformation of the vectors representing light rays passing an optical system, and is a powerful tool for analysis of optical imaging systems. We introdu ce the diffraction matrix of diffractive optical element similarly to those of the refraction and reflection elements, and consider how matr ices may be used to describe the ray propagation through holographic o ptical system.
