M. Desmidt et al., IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL OBSERVATIONS IN THE CECA OF CHICKENS INFECTED WITH SALMONELLA-ENTERITIDIS PHAGE TYPE-4, Poultry science, 77(1), 1998, pp. 73-74
One-day-old specific-pathogen-free White Leghorn chicks were inoculate
d orally with Salmonella enteritidis phage type 4 to study adhesion an
d invasion of the ceca by immunohistochemistry. Positive staining baci
lli were associated with the epithelial surface and were present in th
e lumen of the cecal crypts. They were observed in the interstitial ti
ssue and in the cytoplasm of macrophage-like cells in the lamina propr
ia. A granulomatous nodule containing positive staining bacilli was pr
esent in the submucosa of the cecum of one bird at 14 d after inoculat
ion.
