Crystallization kinetics of the cordierite-type (MgAl1.83Si2.25Oy) gla
ss with the BaO addition (X molar ration) in the powder form has been
studied by non-isothermal DTA. Formation of multiphase corresponding t
o various BaO content was investigated by X-diffraction technique. Add
ition of small amount of BaO (X less than or equal to 3%) to the cordi
erite-based glass could suppress the crystallization of the alpha-cord
ierite phase. Enstatite and hexacelsian phases were the predominant ph
ase with the increase of BaO content in the range of 3% < X < 8% and X
greater than or equal to 8%, respectively. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science
