In recent years NIR spectroscopy has been successfully used to study t
he kinetic reactions of cross-linked resins. Since the role played by
hydrogen bonding strongly influences the chemical, physical and mechan
ical properties of polymers containing hydroxyl, urethane, amine or am
ide functional groups, it is not surprising that the change of hydroge
n bonding: during the cure can modify the absorptivity of chemical gro
ups under investigation (up to 10% for the NH2 combination band in a s
olvent amine blend) and can lead to inaccurate infrared quantitative a
nalysis. More care should be taken in the choice of the reference band
to monitor the reaction cure.
