Acid potassium soaps (KHA(2), in which A stands for carboxylate) of my
ristic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid were studied with a Fouri
er-transform infrared spectrometer. The infrared spectra of the acid s
oaps showed only one carboxylate mode in the range 1800-1500 cm(-1). I
t is suggested that a new type of H-bonding, in which the proton is sh
ared by two carboxylate groups, exists in the acid soaps. In this work
, it was also observed that these acid soaps underwent structural tran
sitions with increasing pressure. The spectral results are analysed an
d discussed.
