The infrared spectra of boron trifluoride co-deposited with dimethyl e
ther and dimethyl sulphide in nitrogen and argon matrices have been re
corded at cryogenic temperatures. The wavenumber shifts of the monomer
bands resulting from the formation of 1:1 electron donor-acceptor com
plexes have been measured and rationalized on the basis of the interac
tions of the Lewis acid (boron trifluoride) with hard (dimethyl ether)
and soft (dimethyl sulphide) bases.
