The sorption of the plasma proteins human serum albumin (HSA) and huma
n fibrinogen (FIB) onto hemodialytic cellulosic substrates was investi
gated by the surface-sensitive ATR-FT-IR spectroscopy. By means of thi
s method we monitored quantitatively the kinetics of protein sorption
onto acetylated and unmodified cellulose (AKZO-NOBEL), which are used
as hemodialytic blood filter material. Furthermore, secondary structur
e alterations of the adsorbed proteins were detected and assigned. The
spectroscopic findings were compared with the results of zeta potenti
al and contact angle measurements in corresponding sorption experiment
s and were qualitatively related to blood compatibility.
