A novel Fourier-transform spectrometer based on optical fibres (FO-FTS
) was constructed. The optical retardation between the arms of a Mach-
Zehnder type interferometer made of a single-mode optical fibre is mod
ulated by variation of the fibre temperature. Spectra of a multimode l
aser diode and a broad-band light source were recorded. Coherent avera
ging of multiple interferograms was successfully applied to enhance th
e signal-to-noise ratio of the interferograms. Application of the FO-F
TS to chemically selective imaging of surfaces is proposed.
