Social service organizations devote a large number of resources to tra
ining staff to work more effectively with clients and communities. How
ever, the literature on the transfer of training indicates that much o
f this may be wasted. The authors review the literature on the transfe
r of training and report the results of a small pilot study, in an eff
ort to determine how organizations can use training more effectively.
This review focuses on three main areas presented in the literature: i
ndividual attributes related to motivation to transfer training to the
jobs, training curriculum, and the work environment. The authors disc
uss the implications of the literature and the study for the role of s
ocial work supervisors and administrators.
