Confirmatory factor analysis results for Hinkin and Schriesheim's meas
ures of interpersonal power are reported, Consistent with French and R
aven's theoretical work a five-factor oblique model provided the best
fit to the data in two independent samples. No support was obtained fo
r a two-factor model consisting of Position Power (Coercive, Reward, a
nd Legitimate power items) and Personal Power (Referent and Expert pow
er items). For the five-factor oblique model, invariance tests suggest
ed that six of the factor pattern coefficients and four of the disatte
nuated correlations were noninvariant across the two groups. The discu
ssion suggests directions for future work.
