Photoluminescence spectra of the (1 1 0) and (1 1 1)A CdTe single crys
tals etched with a Br/methanol solution have been studied. We have fou
nd a difference of the above-band-gap photoluminescence lines between
the (1 1 0) and (1 1 1)A surfaces, which is due to the selection rules
for phonons in CdTe. On the basis of the model which considers etchin
g-related Cl to act as a non-Gamma associated defect, the hot photolum
inescence beyond the fundamental absorption edge of CdTe has been inte
