We report on cavity polaritons arising from the strong coupling betwee
n quantum well excitons and the Fabry-Perot mode of a CdTe-based micro
cavity at 4 K. The sample, fully grown by molecular beam epitaxy, is a
3 lambda/2 cavity containing six CdTe quantum wells, embedded in CdMn
Te/CdMgTe Bragg reflectors. The wedge-shaped structure of the sample a
llows the study of a multiple anticrossing between the photon mode and
three excitonic levels: E1H1(1s), E1H1(2s) and E1L1(1s). This provide
s an accurate determination of the oscillator strength for each excito
n. Finally, the Rabi splitting for the E1H1(1s) exciton is measured ve
rsus temperature up to 270 K. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B
