Abstract
The conventional notion of science and technology on the nanometer sca le is the progress of observation and precision down to the atomic lev el and the continued miniaturization from today's microelectronics to tomorrow's nanoelectronics. A more adventurous approach to the nanowor ld is the assembly scenario, in which nanomachines are assembled from nanometer-scale building blocks, including molecules anl macromolecule s. Together, miniaturization and assembly will provide new opportuniti es and novel ways of solving problems, inspired by the most elegant an d efficient ways of nature. Nanotechnology is crucial to ensuring a su stainable development.
